The Cold of Winter

So after a great post title like that I have to admit anyone north of us is going to hate me when I tell how cold it is. 🙂 mid 40’s to 70ish

So we don’t have it that bad but it has been getting pretty cold on the boat. In an effort to fix it we have been looking at heaters/stoves etc.. The propane one that we have works great but providing it with propane is a bit of a pain as well as expensive.

We have been using a little resistive electric floor heater. One of the little ones and it has been doing ok and surprisingly not costing a huge amount to run. Our top power bill so far has been 50 dollars. After finding that just about anything in the way of buying and installing a diesel/wood/anything stove/heater is going to start at a base of a grand and go up I decided to postpone that project and trying something a lot simpler. 🙂 One 10 dollar window shrink kit from Home Depot.

I have to say after doing each of the 6 port lights, both the forward hatch and salon skylight as well as the 4 big windows in the salon that we have noticed an large difference. It is much warmer. The second thing we have done is cut out inserts using reflectix insulating material and putting it outside the port lights between them and the screens. On the one hand this definitely helps keep it warm but it also stops all light through the port lights.

Spam Registrations Deleted

It’s been a while since I have done much to update the website.  We have been very busy working on Valkyr. New hard dodger, bimini, new deck paint job, installing hot water heater, installing all new 120 volt inlet, isolation transformer, circuit breaker and automatic transfer relay for it and the inverter to run to as well as a thousand other little projects. One of these days I will do some write up’s of the projects.

However that isn’t the main topic of this post. Though I haven’t been posting much I have been keeping track of whats going on in the website. In the last few weeks some of you will have noticed a lot of spam popping up on the forum and the disappearing a few hours to days later. We have been having actually people signing up and then later manually posting spam to the forum. I have been suspicious of some of the emails and user names that people have been registering with but hey there are some weird usernames and email addresses out there. As users have posted spam I have removed it and deleted their user accounts. However after my 3rd round of manually deleting all the spams I am getting a little frustrated.  I have deleted every user that I even remotely think is not a valid user. If I have mistakenly deleted you please let me know and then recreate your account. I don’t think I deleted any valid users though. Next is a general warning. If this continues I am going to move registration on the site to where when new users register they have to be approved by me before they are able to post anywhere. This will include them having to write a paragraph about who they are and why they want to be […]

Stories of s/v Valkier,DE38:All the shit that accumulates #3 Composting Your way to Odor Free by Scott Carle

To see why we went composting read the articles that precede this one. All the shit that accumulates 1 http://downeasteryachts.com/archives/1366 and 2 🙂 http://downeasteryachts.com/archives/1707

After the previous experiences we installed a natures head composting head. The following composite article is a compilation of the installation and two years of usage and a few answers to questions others have asked us.

Installation

We installed the “Natures Head” composting toilet this past weekend. It fits perfectly side to side (read “it is a tight fit”) to get it in the head compartment  you take the top section off the bottom section. This is just a matter of unclipping two clips, one on either side of the unit and then sliding the top section left 3 inches or so as you lift it up to disengage the rear hinge. At that point both pieces will easily fit through either of the head doors.

Here is a few picture of the two stainless angle pieces that hold the unit to the floor. The first shows how we marked where to set the mounts. We put the head in place and them made sure that we had room on either side for the crank to turn on the right without hitting the wall and the latch on the left side of the unit to open as well as being able to slide the top to the left when pulling it off the hinge when removing it. Once it was spaced right we took a pencil and just drew a line around the backside of the angle pieces to mark where they went.

After drilling the holes with a 3/16 inch drill bit we placed the mounts over the holes to double check everything.

And then used 14×1 1/2″ stainless steal oval head screws to […]
