Website Down for performance upgrade

I hadn’t posted on this yet but actually the site has been down since yesterday afternoon here till early afternoon today. Almost 24 hours.. The site runs on a virtual web server and I shut it down to move it from the old physical server to a newer one. You will notice that already the site is much faster than it was. Hopefully it will be even faster once I get in the ram to bump the server from 4 gigs to 32 gigs in the next week or so. The server is running other virtual severs and ram is the limiting factor at the moment.

The virtual server the website is on also serves up about 5 other websites and on the old server over the last year or so the performance has been extremely poor. Mostly due to the database server running on it also. I can dedicate more processor cores and ram to it on the new server. Like I said you should be seeing a bit of a performance increase already. You should see another in a few days.  I’m sorry I didn’t warn anyone that the site would be down but the opportunity to move to a new machine happened suddenly and I had to do it right then. We recently upgraded the upstream data bandwidth on the internet connection also. Hopefully this will all be adequate for a long time to come 🙂

I also upgraded the operating system both on the physical and virtual servers at the same time I did the physical move for the virtual server, so it has been a busy couple days for me.

As always when I do such major changes please, anyone, let me know if you notice anything wrong or have issues.

LOL this is your […]

Searching on the website

You should find that when using the search function on the website that the results given are much better and more relevant. I replaced the existing search with a better one. Please let me know if you notice a difference 🙂

Spam Registrations Deleted

It’s been a while since I have done much to update the website.  We have been very busy working on Valkyr. New hard dodger, bimini, new deck paint job, installing hot water heater, installing all new 120 volt inlet, isolation transformer, circuit breaker and automatic transfer relay for it and the inverter to run to as well as a thousand other little projects. One of these days I will do some write up’s of the projects.

However that isn’t the main topic of this post. Though I haven’t been posting much I have been keeping track of whats going on in the website. In the last few weeks some of you will have noticed a lot of spam popping up on the forum and the disappearing a few hours to days later. We have been having actually people signing up and then later manually posting spam to the forum. I have been suspicious of some of the emails and user names that people have been registering with but hey there are some weird usernames and email addresses out there. As users have posted spam I have removed it and deleted their user accounts. However after my 3rd round of manually deleting all the spams I am getting a little frustrated.  I have deleted every user that I even remotely think is not a valid user. If I have mistakenly deleted you please let me know and then recreate your account. I don’t think I deleted any valid users though. Next is a general warning. If this continues I am going to move registration on the site to where when new users register they have to be approved by me before they are able to post anywhere. This will include them having to write a paragraph about who they are and why they want to be […]

Server side caching performance issues

We have recently had a user report issues with new posts not showing up for him and I wanted to give a brief explanation as to what is happening.

For a long time the website was being slowed to a crawl because google and other search engines would just about hammer the website to a stop as they indexed the sites on the server. I enable server side caching of the websites as static pages to allow them to index the site without causing the database which the site is normally created from to get hammered. I think everyone will notice the the website is a bit faster in the last month or so. (when the server has been up 🙂

So what happens is that if you are not a registered member of the website and are not logged into the website/forum then you will get the static pages. If you log in you will get served up pages directly from the database. The static pages don’t update instantly so if your not logged in you might not see a new post on the forums for a few hours to a day or so. If you are logged in you will see new posts instantly as you will get the latest page from the database.

This was a compromise I had to make to still allow search engines to index the website so that people searching for Downeaster Yachts or other terms relative to our site to find us while still giving reasonable performance to our members.

Website down

I know that a lot of you will have noticed that the website has been down. Well actually it hasn’t been down, but the DNS server that tells your web browser where to go to open the website has been down. We think it was a bad power supply but when we replaced it with another one the server went down again a few hours later. Since since that was a used power supply we are still hoping that it is a power supply issue. I installed power supply number three today. If the server goes down again I will have to rebuild the server or move it to a new computer. The end result is that the server has been down since sometime this past weekend and if this last power supply doesn’t fix it could possibly be down for another few days. Hopefully that doesn’t happen and it is fixed as of now. If not please be patient.

If it is down and you need to contact me you can call me at 843-465-6555 or email me at audeojude@yahoo.com

My company and personal websites as well as all email for them depends on this server also so if it is down all my other infrastructure is down also. Use the above contact info in that case.

Update as of 5/8/12.. we are still experiencing issues with the DNS server. I am going to have to put a new server in. Hopefully that will happen today or tomorrow. Thanks for your patience.

Second update 5/8/12 I have replaced the server. Hopefully this will fix the issue. 🙂 We weren’t able to determine what was causing it to power off. After replacing the power supply twice we think it is something in the Motherboard/CPU/Memory. I didn’t feel like […]
