Jason Rose's Bohdran  a DE32  has mid boom sheeting and there are a few other boats setup that way. We are planning on doing this to Valkyr soon also.

Here is the link to the information on Bohdran http://downeasteryachts.com/th.....m-projects

If you need more detailed info I would talk to Jason at http://www.jasonrose.com

I added the Schaefer Bridgedeck Traveller system: http://www.defender.com/produc.....sp?path=-1|118|2234|311658|312111&id=118119

on my DE 32 just forward of the companionway.  It's held up well and is certainly up to the task for the 32.  It's supposed to be good for boats up to 38, so it should work for your boat as well.  I added two bails to the boom forward and aft of the traveller and run a 4:1 setup.  For the most part I can still handle the main by hand, but I do have a lewmar 16 that I run it to when I need it.  I drilled out the deck and reinforced the traveller holes with epoxy columns before I installed it and it's held up well.

Hope that helps,

Jason Rose

Jason,

I tried to follow the link  but for some reason it didn't work. I even tried to search defenders site for the product description as well as the product id in the link above.  Not sure whant the deal on it is. Were you just looking at it on defender or is it an old link you had that might not  be any good now?

as far as I know there isn't a limitation on the forum for posting long links so I'm not sure what happend with that one. The tiny url worked great though.

Gracie Emmett always had mid-boom sheeting. We've upgrade Harken 32.2 sp ST winches to replace the line stoppers, as well as added boom preventers. Blocks and winch backing plates over sized for safety. Over sized lines mainly for hand comfort. Exact equipment specs (blocks and sheets) available for anyone interested.  de32ge@gmail.com

We recently added a traveler to Isabella.  We'll post  pics in the next few weeks as to what it looks like.  We actually took the gallows off, used the stainless to make the stand for the traveler.  We also received a fair amount of wisdom from Jason!!  He really help guide us thru this process.  Thanks Jason!!!

We are going to be fabricating a hard doger soon for Valkyr and would like anyone that might have an idea of size and strength needed to incorporate a travelor on the back of it over the companionway. It's going to be raised up around 24 inches over the coach roof. We have been trying to figure out what size aluminum or stainless tubing or square section material to fabricate that back part with to handle the loads that the main sheet will put on it.

Here are several photos of a DE32 with a mid-boom traveler. This boat was located in Texas and listed for $80K in 2005.

That looks nice and would be easy for us to do.. our problem is that we are going to put it on top of the hard doger which will be about 24 inches higher than the cabin top.. I'm still trying to figure out the design and strengty of the material that is needed.

These diagrams of the mid boom sheeting are from the original DE32 (cutter rig) owner's boat manual.  Although a little dated, they do show the designer's intent for the main sheet configuration.

The most obvious weakness in the original mid-boom sheet arrangement is the lack of purchase at the end of the main sheet. This original layout didn't have a winch, only a single starboard side cleat. You would need arms of steel and faultless sail/boom handling to work the main sheet. One good point about this arrangement is that it has two attachment points/bails on the boom.  Even with an upgraded 4:1 purchase on each side of the main sheet, we still found that sheet stoppers were not sufficient, we needed winches so that all the crew could manage the main sheet.

Yep I am planning on a decent sized winch and line clutch. I haven't decided whether to go with a 4:1 or 6:1 purchase. I like the Idea of 4:1 just for how much less line you need, but the extra purchase on a main the size of ours would be nice. I've got a few projects in front of this one though so it will be a while.

I have put a page up under the DE32's technical pages at http://downeasteryachts.com/th.....ig-details with the PDF's that Duane was kind enough to send in as well as the pictures above he has posted. I probably should link from the DE38 pages to it also as if someone hadn't told me it was for a DE32 I would have thought it was for our DE38.

Thanks for the scanned documents Duane 🙂

I changed the mid-boom sheeting to end boom which because of the better purchase needs only a four part tackle (at the most 5 part) and no winch (on the DE32). We removed the winch on the cabin top which may have been for the mainsheet or maybe the staysail (which doesn't need one either). So was able to get rid of a lot of extra gear (and expense) and fabricate a better 'garage' for the companionway hatch, dodger and bimini (pics on Pelli re-fit).

Anyway - the cluncky s/s traveller that had been on the cabintop is, I believe, still at the consignment shop down here in Oriental,NC and could be retrieved if anyone wants it.

Tim,

How long is the travelor? How much do you want for it? What size/brand is it for fitings?

My plan was to get one that extends the width of the top of the hard doger which will be about 12" less in width than the coach roof at the companionway. 🙂

Hey Scott - I think it is only between 3 and 4 ft. long! I  had assumed it was the original, but looking through the original specs/documents etc. it obviously wasn't as she was originally tiller steered with aft sheeting. So the wheel/pedestal and mid-boom sheeting must have been a conversion. The consignment store is closed Mondays, but I'll check it out during the week and take a photo of it with measurements. I can't see many people with siutable boats around that could use it - so it's yours if you want it for free (or anyone else if you don't).

Cool... I'm definately interested... at your convenience though... 🙂 it's not a project that will be happening in the next month or two 🙂

If you can maybe measure the length and width of track and if you can a picture 🙂

Thanks,

scott
