Recently came across this topic of ensuring secure WiFi internet connections when using free WiFi hotspots (for example cafes, restaurants..). The way the pro's do it is to use the WiFi and then connect to a VPN provider (requires a subscription, $$), and then it creates a secure link to do anything else (simplistic explanation).
Here is one service provider. I have not used them, they are a good starting point for more info.
Since I am doing a lot of things from my boat now, via the local free wifi hotspot (which has no security, not good for especially financial stuff), I'm going to consider subscribing to a VPN service or running VPN from my existing webhost.
