I found just a little information on Running backstays for the cutter rig DE38

Does anyone else know how necasarry they are. Valkyr doesn't have them and it doesn't look as if she ever did. I have sailed her in up to 25 to 30 knots of wind and she did fine.. didn't see any crazyness with the mast. The authors of the old posts I found seem to think that they were standard equipment.
