It says on the top "Open to Clean". when I started to loosen it, it started to gush water.

Do I need to close a seacock ? I don't have a manual for this device.

If the strainer is located below the water line (and your boat is in the water) then yes, it would be a good idea to close the seacock before any opening it. It would be better to relocate the strainer to a point above the water line if possible.

Our water strainer was like this. You did have to shut the seacock.

Thanks. That worked. But I notice that the lid leaks just a tiny bit. Even though I've tightened it pretty tight. (The top wing nuts.) There's no gasket there. Should there be one?

thats why we pulled ours... just havent gotten around to replacing or finding a gasket. Actually on ours it would sometimes pull air when the engine was running.
