Sorry for this seamingly simple question, but the manual I have does not mentions this. I have a Perkins 34 horse diesel and was wondering how many running hours do people run their engines between oil changes? I'm guessing that the make is not the critical issue. So I'd like to hear what people are doing in this regard.

Thanks.

I think industry standard is about every 100 hours. Better oils seem to be safe to push that out a bit.

Don't hold me to that though as its been a while since I looked it up 🙂

Thanks. That gives me about another 50 hours. At the rate I'm going, that'll be about 2016. 🙂

lol… hmmm… i didn't mention that even if your not running the engine that bad stuff happens to the oil over time because it isn't being used 🙂

Here are two articles by respected people in the industry or organizations in the industry 🙂

Thanks Scott.. That pretty much means I need to change the oil and filter. It's got about 50 hours on it and won't be run much for at least another 6 months.

Oh joy. But I guess I should get used to it now. At least access to the engine on a DE 38 is very ample.

true its much easier than some.. reaching the stuffing box though? that is a major pain.. You have to lay on top of the engine and hang down behind it. I'm 6'2" and have long arms and I can barely reach. It was a major pain a couple years ago when we repacked ours.
