I painted for many years professionally  and painting over laminate is tricky sometimes. There are many primers out there that say they can get the job done but not many succeed.
The problem is the smooth slick surface does not let the paint take hold so it evetually "chips". There are however primers that do work and used alongside a sanding of the substarte it can be effective.

You could have also used a method I used to use to lighten wood called overglazing. I used to do a lot of "Faux Finishing" and one technique  is to make a glaze from oil products and tint them to the right color  teak, oak...whatever. You then BASE coat your wood (pale beige very light) and then using a wood graining tool lay in a grain into your glaze, This can then be overglazed with oil base "Polyshades" to the desired color with more coats.
I know it sounds confusing but it really does lighten wood.

A real quick down and dirty method is to simply overglaze your woodwork with a stain varnish combo (oil base) with a small amount of off white glaze and coat till you get to your desired lightness.
This quick method requires wiping and sanding your woodwork first, A really great product for "sanding" wood with liquid sandpaper is with a product called "Willbond"
There are many "liquid sandpapers that simply do not work..they are meant for the homeowner....this one works!!! want proof
next time at lowes open a can of liquid sandpaper and sniff ....
Now find "Willbond" usually in pro paint stores,  open and sniff...oh youll smell the difference LOL

Scott and I are going to move our boat closer to our house so we'll have easier access. I did find that the paint for the laminate chipped very easily.

Right now I trying to get back to covering new boat cushions for both the V-berth and the Main saloon.
