I'm curious. Has anyone's ever seen or actually replaced the factory mast with a taller mast in an effort to increase the sail area and ; therefore, pointing/windward performance? I realize new sails would be needed but I was just wondering if it had been done yet.

Not to my knowledge but you should sail one of the cutter rigged boats before deciding you need a taller mast. I have always been very impressed with sailing performance as is. That being said as is includes the staysail. With just the jib and main up I have found our boat to be a hair sluggish. Putting the staysail up is like turbo charging the rig to me. She just digs in and goes.

Light air performance is very decent. Not race horse but I have reasonably gotten 50% of wind speed in 4 to 5 knots of wind.

In 25 knots of wind with all sail up we have had days that we consistently did 8 to 9.5 knots on a broad reach.

Going to windward  6+ knots....  It's going to vary a lot depending on sea state obviously. Our sails are old and a lot of stretch in them. The main is very very heavy material. I wouldn't be surprised if it is as heavy as 11 or 12oz. The staysail is also quite heavy.. The jib is a fair amount lighter at most likely 7 to 8 oz's. I am guesstimating the weights of the sails so don't take this as gospel 🙂

Now that all being said... with the stock mast and rig on these boats they are very stiff. We don't have to take the first reef till after 22 to 25 knots of wind if we are having fun and willing to hand steer. They would probably do well with a taller rig if you wanted to put that first reef in, in the mid teens.

Thank you for your input! How close to the wind with your vessel sail?

I wish she pointed really high, but we only tack through about 90 degrees on fairly flat days. However with new sails I would bet we could narrow that by about 5 to 10 degrees. our sails are very old and baggy 🙂

We have friends here with a Tarten 10 that will tack through about 70 degrees. Almost feels like sailing dead upwind some days 🙂 They win lots of races.

Us, Not so much 🙂 Of course at 33 feet they only weight 6,000 lbs to our 20,000 and have 5ft of head room through out the whole boat to our 6ft +, They have a 6ft fin keel to our 5ft full keel 🙂 different boats 🙂

I do guarantee we have more fun on the water in a lazier kinda way with a full galley lots of lazy room.
