In reading the article about bronze chainplates, I came accros a fascinating series of articles on synthetic rigging.. According to some of the articles it is stronger and about = prices as stainless. The only unknown is uv durabilaty. Right now they are saying 5 years but that they expect the final numbers will be longer. Also some new covered products coming out that should significantly extend the uv life span.

I talked with John Franta at Colligo Marine a couple days ago and he is putting together a quote for the materials to do Valkyr's rigging with the new synthetic rigging. Even more interesting is that I through an unrelated matter happened to speak with Brian Duffy who has worked with John at Colligo Marine in rigging boats with this stuff. I asked his opinion of the synthetic rigging and he was very positive about it. He said that he might drop by and post some of his experiences here on this thread about the topic.
When I get back the quote from Colligo Marine I will post some more details.
I am pretty set in my mind that if I have to start replacing Valkyr's rigging it will be this route. The ability to maintain it myself and the amount of weight aloft that would go away are two very attractive thoughts to me. I think I would be willing to risk having to replace the rig in 7 or 8 years just based on this. Brian in my phone conversation with him told me that he thinks this rigging will last almost indefinitely if wiped down with a UV inhibitor annually.
I also asked him if this stuff would be suitable for the bobstay and his thoughts on that were pretty radical. It sounds as these newer generation of lines are turning the design and engineering of standing and running rigging on their ears.

I strongly encourage any of you that are able to visit Colligo at Annapolis this show. Southbound and Colligo will be hosting a work shop teaching how to work with this product, too.
I have rigged 4 boats complete with this kit, and Southbound has done a couple more since I sold. JOhn has now many dozens of boats sailing with this rig. Mine will be next on the list too.
As a matter of fact. If someone buys Breeze Maven, I will help them to measure her complete for new rigging in Dyneema (its not needed yet, but at time of sale we can meausre the full boat, which will be pretty nice to file!!!)
Post some direct questions related to dyneema, and I will be happy to answer.

If you do measure Breeze mavens Rig could you post the measurments back out here so I can put it up over on this page. http://downeasteryachts.com/th.....-all-boats Right now we don't have those measurements posted for any boat but the DE 38 Cutter rig.
Actuallly anyone that has the measurements for any model and rigging configuration please send them to me so I can put them up on the website. So if you have replaced the rigging on your boat and still have the reciets showing what you got or something like that then scan it and email it to me or post it up on the forum so I can add it to the factory specs page for your boat. If your willing to share the costs of your rigging send that in also. It will help give a general feel for what it costs to re-rig one of these boats. Specify if you had someone else do all the work or if you did it yourself as that will help clarify where the costs are applied.
