Hello all,

I'm currently replacing my spreaders (will post pics etc in Spreader Replacement thread) and have noticed that I really should replace my standing rigging wires as some of them are rusting and one or two even have a cracked wire.

Luckily Tondelayo has Swageless Terminal ends so I can just undo them and fit new wire. Does anyone know if our boats came with these fittings as standard equipment and if so who supplied them. Sta-lok,Hi-Mod,Norseman Gibb etc.

I'm pretty sure mine are Norseman Gibb (Now Navtec Norseman) and will confirm and include photos next time I post.

I am currently investigating wire types and am leaning towards Dyform Wire. (I still can't get my head around Hi tech Fibres as I just don't think it would look right)

I'd be interested to hear any stories from anyone who has recently replaced their Standing rigging.

Scott;I'll measure as I go so you can put the specs up for a DE 38 Ketch in your "Rigging Lengths" Thread

Thanks

Dave

Thanks Dave,

will be looking forward to putting those measurments up.

I would say that those are not factory fittings. Valkyr has standard swage fittings on the ends of the shrouds with all bronze turnbuckles to stainless chain plates.

They might have been special order from the factory but I would be willing to bet that someone re-rigged the boat and upgraded to them at that time. If you have broken strands in your rigging then it is a REALLY good time to replace the rigging. Nice thing is that with those fittings you can re-use them and save a bundle on the job. Basically your mostly going to be just replacing the cable.

The dyform cables look good. higher strength for slightly less diameter. Can you still get it? I don't think I can even source it in the US any more. I looked a year or so and a few people had some remnants in stock but weren't carrying it any more.

Actually I think that at least some of the shrouds will be getting replaced on Valkyr in the next year or so. I have to go up the mast and do a good examination here in the next few weeks.

Just a note here on my last post. We did inspect Valkyr's rigging and found two cracked lower swages and ended up replacing the standing rigging. We went with 316 stainless and HyMod mechanical fittings both top and bottom on all the stays. The stays that were 1/4 inch we replaced with 9/32 to move them up a size and to standardize the most common size wire on the boat as well as the fittings so we could carry one size of replacement wire and fittings. Other than the whisker stays and bob stay everything on the boat is now 9/32. According to the rigger where I bought the rigging it only added a couple lbs to weight aloft.
