Howdy to everyone, I hope your sailing season was/is wonderful!

I bought a 110 Genoa and installed a roller furling for it this last summer. I have a hanked on "large" staysail. The genoa when extended has a clew height about 5' off the deck. When sailing close hauled with staysail and genoa the genoa tends to "cave in" along the foot, collapsing inward. Drop the staysail and the genoa pulls as it should, very nice sail shape.

Has anyone else experienced this? And if so what sort of solution did you use? My problem seems less with my older smaller staysail and I do wonder if a higher cut to the genoa would lessen this undesirable interaction between the staysail and the genoa.

What are other folks doing with sail combinations forward?

Hey Scott,

Sorry I didn't drop in on this back when you posted. Just had a new member ask a sort of similar question about staysail and jib/genoa interactions so thought I would drop over and post here.

I'm not sure what is happening with your genoa, on ours with have a  150 ish size jib/genoa that is more a deck sweeper than high clewed and it sets and sails like a dream with the staysail. It sounds like you might need to pull the staysail in a bit so that your slot opens up or maybe ease the jib a hair. I know that with just our jib that the boat sails ok but with the staysail and the jib up she just powers up and starts coming alive. We have the staysail boom still. Not sure if you do and if it makes much difference. we will be playing with ours with boom and without to see if it makes much difference sometime in the future.

I am going to have to purchase a new used jib in the next year or two and I think If I can find a deal  used I might get a 100% as well as a 140 to 150 to replace the current one. On my old smaller sailboat I had a 100% that was a blast to sail with. I would love to go to the 100% and have a code zero for lighter airs 🙂 affording the code zero its own furler would rock!

The other question asked on the other section of the forum was about tacking with the jib and staysail. On Valkyr we always sail with both up, and tack the jib through the slot. It will vary on how easy this is on how stiff your jib is as well as your timing. When we are in the grove we can most of the time tack our 150% jib through the slot. However sometimes someone needs to go forward and help it through the slot. Our jib is old and well worn so it is a bit softer than a new jib and I have the feeling that it feeds through the slot easier.  I would think that a 130% or under would be much easier to tack but again it will probably vary based on weight and stiffness of the Dacron in the sail. I don't remember were but I read a post on another forum a while back I think discussing this very subject. They had just purchased a new jib and it wasn't feeding through the slot as well as their older worn one.

Happy New Year!

I think you are correct Scott, it's likely a trim issue. But for the life of me I couldn't trim it out last season. I'm going to go sailing with the folks from the sail loft in a month or so and we'll see if we can get it figured out then. I don't have the boom, she didn't have one when I purchased her and just had the staysl cut for that when it was made. Thanks for the input!

I priced a new boom from ..hmm... forgot who it was not.. a manufacture.. Zspars or USSpars.... and they have a bunch of scratch and dent mast and boom sections. I was quoted about 200 for a replacement for the main boom plus about a 100 in shipping. They said it was in good shape but had a scratch on it.

found it

http://www.usspars.com/products/

on the bottom of the page the note the special deals .. you have to call and ask though as they don't list individual parts etc..

I would like to do away with our boom on the staysail and will try sailing without it one day to compare performance. However she sails really well with it. I wouldn't want to give up any performance.
