Jason of svBodhran just submitted a very nice write up of custom projects he has done to Bodhran his DE32. Two of those projects are ones that we want to do on Valkyr our DE38. Moving the mainsheet to a mid boom sheeting arrangement and putting in a boomkin. Jasons writeup can be found here http://downeasteryachts.com/th.....m-projects

One of the questions we have is how high up can we raise the travelor and boomkin. We are thinking about putting a hard doger in and mounting them on top of that. We have been thinking about the doger height. We know that we have to have a certain amount of clearance for the blocks and such on the travelor for it to work smoothly.  Also how about the boomkin. Can it just be an inch or two lower than the boom. Does it need to be 6 inches lower so as not to get whacked hard by the boom when sailing? It's something I have no experience with.

So Jason, or anyone else out there with experience with boomkins and travelors that are raised up close to the boom, what is your experiences. What would  you recomend?

Scott,

Not to be a jerk, but a boomkin is a spar off the stern for attaching the backstay to on boats with unusually long booms, ketchs or yawls.  What holds the boom in place is called a boom gallows.  As for your questions, I'd sheet in the main as hard as you can and then position the gallows an inch or two below.  You just need the leech of the sail to pick the boom up and clear the gallows.  Then check that it still clears fine with your 1st and 2nd reefs in place.  What I did with my gallows was to position it at head height when I'm standing in the cockpit and then have my sailmaker cut off a bit along the foot to shorten the sail so that it would fit the gallows.  So now I can see fine under my gallows and hopefully the boom is high enough not to crack me in the head if I ever pull and accidental gybe.

As for the traveler, I'm also thinking about building a hard dodger and putting the traveler on top.  I'm not sure how high is too high, but I've got a buddy here that has a Kiwi made boat with that arrangement.  I'll see if he has any ideas.

🙂 no worries. I'm glad to be corrected. I was thinking boomkin sounded weird but just went with it.. brain dead moment.. I get dyslexic sometimes with words.
