FYI …

I have a Garmin GPSmap76Cx hooked up to a MacBook with the software system : MacGPSPro … and used it from Fort Lauderdale FL to Bermuda and back.

Polar Navy is a Mac &/or PC navigation software system with a 30-day free trial.

A free Chartplotter and GPS Navigation software system for Mac & PC : OpenCPN

I have a samsung netbook running linux that has opencpn on it with every one of the NOAA maps on it for the entire US seaboard. A 40 dollar usb gps puck plugged in and the ability to import AIS to it also if I had a AIS unit. :)I can also pull up GRIB files and display them both on their own and integrated into opencpn.

Opencpn will run on windows, mac or linux so you can do the same thing with a windows system.

netbook 400 dollars for the mac daddy version... GPS puck $40... Software free download. maps free download.. linux to replace windows on the Netbook, free download.

so for 440 dollars I have  a 10 inch chart plotter.

oh.. I forgot... I replaced the hard drive with a ssd drive for much faster speed and upgraded to 2 gigs of ram... However I am not counting those costs as they were I wants rather than I needs for the system.

What sort of garmin gps did you use with the MacBook?  I have OpenCPN on my macbook pro and I am trying to find a compatible gps for it.  I also have a samsung netbook set up with both OpenCpn and MaxSea.

One of the DP Officers on a rig I worked on had given me a DVD worth of nautical programs on it.  Low and behold he had given me a working version of MaxSea with every single detailed nautical chart of the world!

It works like a champ and I've been giving it out to as many people as I can.  There is no need for a dongle or additional serial numbers or anything.  Just install it and plug in a gps puck and your set.  Only downside is that it will not work on a mac.  But, the charts work fine with OpenCPN on any operating system.

I don't really have any experience using Drop Box but if I can upload it to Drop Box and it were possible I would gladly share the folder with anyone who was interested.

I use a GarminGPSmap 76Cx ... that works fine with MacGPSPro.

Recently installed OpenCPN but, as yet, have been unable to make it "recognize" the Garmin.

Am able to boot up my MacBook in either Mac or PC (Windows) mode.
