I crewed on the recent west coast Schock 35 Nationals race : http://www.flickr.com/photos/6.....08600@N03/
Racing is a blast. I prefer cruising still. Anyone cut chops on race yachts? The skippers are a wealth of excellent tactics though not sure they know how to anchor!
I learned to sail as crew on a local race boat. A Tartan 10. Boat went to windward like a witch. We figured it at close to a 35 degree tacking angle. it almost felt like we could sail into the wind. Very little room below. With a flush deck and a long cockpit for lots of crew. Best day sailing on that boat was sailing back from a race and doing 11.5 knots on a reach while surfing. We were still doing 9.5 without surfing.
Mostly though I like the cruising style of sailing. Lots of comfort 🙂 and conveniences. Long slow days sailing or at anchor.
