Hi,

I recently purchased my first Downeaster, I'm super excited! It's Viandra, a 1979 cutter rig, hull #AAY01200479-321. It will be residing in eastern North Carolina (not sure which town yet) if you want to update the owner registry. I'm undecided yet if I want to keep the name so that might change. I don't know for sure what the name means (the guy I bought the boat from said he thought it meant the goddess of land or something like that). I can't even figure out what language the name is to look it up. The guy I bought the boat from also said he was told the boat was named by the Downeaster factory in 1979 when it was built. I've never heard of that being done & can't find any documentation of it anywhere. Can anybody tell me if this is something you've heard of with the Downeasters? If the boat has really had the same name since it was made I might be more inclined to keep it but if not I might change it to something that suits me better.

Thanks.

Sam

Hey - congrats on the new acquisition. Never heard of the mfg'r naming the vessel, but maybe the original owner commissioned her and had the Downeast yard apply the name to the stern.

Regarding your hull number. AYY 01200 4 79 32 1 if you're not aware.

AYY is the mfgr designation for  (Down East)

01200 is the serial number (Hull# 120)

4 is month of Mfgr (April)

79 is the year (1979)

32 is (AOL)

1 is the rig arrangement (cutter)

I googled Viandra. Its cosmic, something akin to astrology in a sense. Its a way of being.

Good luck

Leo

The boats came with a certificate from the factory with the name & owners details. I have the one for ours.  The name on ours had been changed by some intermediate owners, but we changed it back to the original 'Halcyon'. I would expect that the name was chosen by the original owners & the factory filled it in on the certificate for delivery.

Perhaps this is what the previous owner was referring to.

Thank ya'll for the information. I appreciate any & all info.

I think I found the same kind of certificate you're talking about when I was looking through my boats paperwork folder. It's not labeled as the certificate or anything but mine has a printed rope design framing an area with some lines with the yacht name, hailing port, owners name, etc on them. At the bottom it has the Down East Yachts information.
