When I bought my '78 DE38, it had 2 stainless sockets each port & stbd. in the cockpit deck - I had not seen them on the previous 4 DE38s I had sailed.
Figured out they're (possibly) for a removable backrest so, made one with 2 x 3/4" s.s. tubes + 2 s.s. bolts & wing-nuts + 1 2x4 and a little paint ... and it actually works!

That first photo was a file photo (owner/boat unknown) that I had of a back rest for DE 38.
(Notice the primary winch mounts.)
