I saw this pic on a sailing blog for a DE 38 - s/v "Lindita" I believe. My initial reaction was "COOL!"
Then I realized we didn't have such a thing on "San Patricio" and I fell into complete despair.[Image Can Not Be Found]
Any of you out there have such an animal aboard you DE 32? Where is it adorned?
All I can think is one of the 3 POs absconded with ours for a souvenir.

That came stock on all boats 🙂 it is mounted at the upper left corner of the bulkhead between the salon and head as viewed from the saloon. If your boat doesn't have it I bet there are some screw holes there and a prior owner pulled it down may he polish it in hell.. that is sacrilege to pull a name plate like that off a boat.
There is some (international? or only U.S. federal? or U.S. state?) regulation that ships must have hull identification number permanently mounted (non-removable) and easily visible, usually in the cabin, to be properly cleared. Something like this:
§ 181.29 Hull identification number display.
Two identical hull identification numbers are required to be displayed on each boat hull.(1) On boats with transoms, to the starboard outboard side of the transom within two inches of the top of the transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest.(2) On boats without transoms or on boats on which it would be impractical to use the transom, to the starboard outboard side of the hull, aft, within one foot of the stern and within two inches of the top of the hull side, gunwale or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest.(3) On catamarans and pontoon boats which have readily replaceable hulls, to the aft crossbeam within one foot of the starboard hull attachment.(4) If the hull identification number would not be visible, because of rails, fittings, or other accessories, the number must be affixed as near as possible to the location specified in paragraph (a) of this section.(b) The duplicate hull identification number must be affixed in an unexposed location on the interior of the boat or beneath a fitting or item of hardware.(c) Each hull identification number must be carved, burned, stamped, embossed, molded, bonded, or otherwise permanently affixed to the boat so that alteration, removal, or replacement would be obvious. If the number is on a separate plate, the plate must be fastened in such a manner that its removal would normally cause some scarring of or damage to the surrounding hull area. A hull identification number must not be attached to parts of the boat that are removable.
the number embossed in the jell-coat on the transom would account for one of those and then there is the number under the forward cabin floor space that is painted/inlaid under a layer of fiberglass in 3 or 4 inch tall letters. You would have to grind away the surface in both cases to remove the numbers.
I have the Bronze Casting …. strangely enough, I found it buried in a compartment when I bought her. ( 1980 DE38, Hull # 229 )
It cleaned up wonderfully, however, I'm clueless as to where on the boat it was originally.
Granted it does not qualify for the identification requirements, obviously because it was removable.
Other than the stern ID Numbers, the only other location I have ID numbers is in the interior side of the cockpit well, visible when you lift the companionway stairs to the engine compartment.

Strange.... I thought up forward in the bilge area was standard for the hidden numbers....However it would meet the requirement in the engine compartment also I think.
I think stock place for bronze plate is at the top of the forward salon/head bulkhead just to the left of the compression post. That is where ours is and I have seen several pictures of others boats that it is installed there also.
Unless its glassed over somewhere or at the bottom of the bilge....I don't think it's on the boat. So either DE-32s never came with such a thing, or a PO is using it as a kitchen trivet or belt buckle. I can't find any sign that such a thing was ever mounted in the salon...bummer.[Image Can Not Be Found]

Maybe one of us should create a mold. It is quite nifty. And detailed.
I thought I had a pic of the DE32 version from oasis. ahh here it is downeasteryachts com /forums/boat-profiles/de32-oasis
hmm... I haven't casted anything but lead before but I bet it isn't that hard. What would you do take and fill in the boat specific engravings to smooth them over and then take a rubber casting of of it. From that make a foam cast or other material to make a lost sand method or impression in other media that you can pour molten metal into.. run up a couple dozen 🙂 and your in business... replacement plaques and belt buckles. Get your engraving stamps out to recreate the numbers and name for any boat.

Now we're talkin'! My alma mater has a small foundry...if I had a good casting I could put on my trusty tweed jacket and talk some starving undergrads into making a small production run. [Image Can Not Be Found]

hmm… If I had some casting rubber I would yank mine down and do that.
maybe one of our California people 🙂 here is a company I have used before that makes mold making products. I have used their epoxy resin before.
if someone ships me some of the mold making stuff and some release agent I will cast mine.. probably easier for one of our west coast brethren to just walk in and buy some though and do theirs.
hehe .. had to re-edit it as I got caught out by the link bug myself. 🙂
