The original lightning ground wires on TOPAZ (DE38 '75) are all badly corroded and the original arrangement, even if it were in proper repair, is not compliant with the ABYC recommendations. I am planning on upgrading the system this winter since the mast is down and I have removed the maststep for a cleanup.

Has anybody upgraded lightning protection on a DE38 – My initial plan is to run a main conductor thru the maststep and down the compression post with a gradual bend along the bulkhead in the head thru the cabin sole and to the turn of the bilge just above the ballast – then thru the hull to an external grounding strip.

I am still in the thinking/investigating stage – any input will be appreciated

Happy New Year all!

just make sure whatever you run through the hull is big enough to carry the current and that you can access it in a hurry if it gets blown out and you need to plug the hole. 🙂 there are so many different theories out there about lightening protection that it is one of those things that I find confusing. other than it is better not to get hit period.
