We just got back from a vacation in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and we saw a boat "for sale" that may be of interest to DE32 lovers! It was on the hard on Culebra, an island off of Puerto Rico, as a dysfunctional boat yard held up by cinderblocks and 2x4s. Looks like there is nothing there except a hull and an engine sitting outside in the cockpit! Didn't go aboard since it looked so precarious but our guess is, if you want to take it, it's yours! I called the phone number on the back (it was out of service) and no one seemed to know who owned the boat, but if you do some digging you're sure to find out. The mast was laying on the ground near by, but was missing a few parts!
If anyone else has seen this boat or knows the story, I'd love to know how long she's been sitting there and why!
That’s an interesting and sad observation, but there are hundreds of such boats lying abandoned all over the world. Forgotten, repossessed, sequested by the boatyard, etc. etc. Such boats are tempting if they can be obtained free, but of course, they never are “free” because they have to be repaired to become fully serviceable. I think anyone taking on such a project would soon find it would have been better to buy a wreck in sailing condition, than a hull with the engine sitting in the cockpit. Of course, that’s why it’s evidently been abandoned in the first place.
Finances are strapped like we have never seen in our lifetime, so a poor boat wasting away in some remote boatyard is naturally tempting to the would-be dreamer.
if you do get a "free" boat you need to make sure that you hold title to it before sinking a lot of money into it. if someone else still owns it or there is a lien on it, you could sink thousands into fixing it up and then have someone just legally take it from you. Not saying it isn't worth doing but just make sure your i's are dotted and t's are crossed.
