What are the options for a Downeaster on a swing mooring?

Having just acquired DE38 #209 & her swing mooring I'd like to make the whole mooring process user friendly, easily handled single-handed and safe for the boat. At present the chain is brought aboard over the stem  & a loop goes over the samson posts. This leaves the chain rubbing the bobstay / dolphin striker. A stainless stemhead fitting has been fitted on the port side, with the inner end of the fretwork on the bowsprit removed to accommodates this.

Has anyone used bobstay fitting at the waterline with a snubber on a mooring? On ours there is a substantial shackle fitted below the bobstay, but is the fitting strong enough for this task? Any other solutions?

I'd also like the process of getting the chain onboard & over the samson posts capable of being handled single-handed by myself or my wife, so thoughts / tips on that subject would be helpful.

Hi Andrew,

If you search "tondelayo.com" and check out my blog "Finally a bow roller" you'll see how I've overcome the bobstay issue. I'm also just about to publish another blog which will show all the detail on how I have Tondy set up on her swing mooring so I'll get back to you here as soon as it's published.

All the best,

David.

David,

Nice piece of handiwork.

The previous owner was concerned about the stress on the bowsprit & surround, particularly on a mooring as opposed to at anchor. The boat was apparently being brought up with quite a jerk when pitching on the mooring.

Good to hear of another DE downunder.

Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

Yes the DE's are pretty rare Down Under. I've just published a blog on my swing mooring set up at http://www.tondelayo.com so perhaps it might give you a few ideas.

I can understand that there would be quite some stress if you are using an "all chain" set up. I have been able to alleviate that by incorporating a fair bit of rope which takes a lot of the shock loading away. Anyway it's all explained in the blog and I hope it helps.

Regards,

David
