Is there a consensus on where to attach dingy davits? I know the stern and I get as far back as possible but vertically on the transom or horizontally on the caprail or the deck just inside the aft caprail?

Anyone made their own or am I just foraging in all the consignment places for used davits?

We tried stowing the RIB that came with the boat under the main but that did not work. Permanently fouled the sailcover so that's not an option unless we get a much smaller tender.

We have ours on the stern and it works ok at dock but what a pita at anchor.. its almost inaccessible to get the dingy on and off the davits back there and get you into or out of the boat from the dingy. As far as traveling with it there, it works well. It is fairly high up on ours so not real worried about following seas etc...  Can't say much more than that. I like the concept of one on the side of the boat.. For real voyaging though I think that on the fordeck is the only reasonable/safe place.

Our Davits are on the stern. We have lines so that the dinghy drops into the water. Not real easy to get on and off. we have a teak ladder but it only attaches to the boat on either side. We also have a inexpensive ladder from Overtons. I have pic but did not know how to post.

🙂 i guess i should have been more specific.. getting the dingy up and down is really easy... 4 and 6:1 mechanical advantage with block and tackle for the bow and stern respectively. Makes easy even with the engine still on the stern to pull it up.. the issue is like you said the getting it from the in the water position detached from the lines and around to the side of the boat for people to get  on and off of it. Or visa versa from the side back to the davits and then to get the lines attached to raise it. Just enough line to get the dingy from the davits to the water on the 6:1 purchase is a little more than 60ft of line. about 40ish for the 4 to 1 purchase. To have enough line to get it to mid boat with the lines attached would be in excess of 130 or 140 ft of line and a real nightmare to handle and keep from tangling. I have thought about some sort of later on the stern for getting in and out of the dingy just for attaching and detaching the davit lines but with the reverse transom it feels cumbersome to me both to safely access it and to go up and down safely.

Hi:

I solved this problem by putting hooks on both ends of the falls.  When launching, I grab the painter and make it fast, then disconnect from the davit arm and drop the falls into the dingy and pull it alongside with the painter.  I hook both ends of the falls on the lifeline for temporary storage if I will be using the dingy for a while.  When retrieving I reconnect the falls to the dingy and then walk the upper ends around to the davits and reconnect.  Sometimes I just marry the upper ends of the falls and retrieve them with a boat hook after getting the dingy astern.  A lot easier than trying to climb up over the stern.
