We have removed our table from valkyr. We were finding it to be just to big and in the way. I have to say that we really love the feeling of openness and ease of walking through the salon now compared to before.
What amazed me was how easy removing it was. It was already designed to just pull out of the mounts. We lifted it straight up about 10 inches and it was out. Here are some before and after pics and pics of the brackets it was mounted in.
Here is with the table in place and opened up. There is no possibility of getting past it if the starboard side is open. You have to close it or climb over the settee.
Here is the bracket on the support pole aft. Notice the three screws that held it on. It was very easy to remove and would be just as easy to put back inplace if needed.
Forward bracket. The slots that the table drops into are a great and easy solution for this. The only issue I might have is that if you God forbid roll the boat over you would have a close to 100lb table fall out and start flying around the boat. Very dangerous in that one situation. This would be easy to fix by drilling a hole through the table and slot and inserting a screw to positively lock it in place.
To give you some idea of how open the salon is now I have put up this video that I took of the new salon cushions. It shows the salon without the table in. This is the improved video 🙂 it is lower quality rendering but much smaller file size. However it should be very viewable.
yes. I have ideas for a folding table that will fold up against the bulkhead out of the way as well as pivot and lock into position to compensate for the angle of heel. However it is way down on the list of projects. It will probably a year or better before I have time to address it. We fine the salon to be much more usable without the table in it than when it was. At home we typically eat sitting around the living room anyway so it feels very much like our normal mode of living without the table. I also find it much more relaxed and friendly when we have guests. Before the forward 2/3 of the port side settee didn't get used at all as it was a pain to get to it to sit. Lots of the time it just ended up with stuff piled there and then left for long periods of time as it was hard to reach. The storage under the settee never got used as it was almost impossible to easily access with the table in place.
The only issue that I have is having a place to set a cup or mug. I am thinking about some dedicated cup/mug/bottle holders in a few places around the salon.
