I have been talking back and forth with Duane of Gracie Emmette about the port settee seat back that on a lot of the boats could be raised to be a single pilot berth over the double berth of the lower seat. On Valkyr it hasn't been very clear how this works. Duane sent me a series of photos on how this is setup on Gracie Emmette. Even though she is a DE32 and Valkyr is a DE38 and there for a bit different in construction in that area there are enough similarities that I am confident I can figure this out. I am going to post Duane's pictures for everyone to see how it works on Gracie Emmette. I would like for anyone else that has pictures of how it works on their boats, DE32, DE38, or DE45's.

I'll post some pics of our set up on Orion when I get back to Canada.
It does make for a small berth though and I don't know that I'd trust it to hold my 210lbs! That being said, my youngest of 3 daughters (5 yrs old) says it's the "best best bunk on the boat"! She has yet to fall out during the night. I have told her that it's only a matter of time though, but that's why daddy keeps all those bungy cords! (To which I receive the dramatic eye roll)
We've found that even with the bunk down we can store copious amounts of life jackets, blankets, etc behind it.

Ours is very similar to that of Gracie E. The barrel bolts are what deter me from placing the "heavy weights" up there. My three daugters will routinely sit up there together and I've never noticed any real sag, I just don't like the design myself.
The more I think about it, putting an attachment point somewhere just below the window on the bulkhead and then running some sort of a strap from the inboard side of the berth when in the "up" position then cinching in tight would serve two purposes in my application. 1: Signifigantly strengthen the berth itself. 2: Keep my youngest daughter from falling on my oldest daughter in the middle of the night! As I said in the last post...it's only a matter of time.
With only one strap it wouldn't really hinder climbing in the berth. I guess it would also help secure any other gear that you may keep there as well. I'll put it on my ever-growing list of things to do this next time home. Pics to follow...

So today I replaced the stock bronze/brass bolts that hold the port settee back in place with some stainless ones with 1/2 inch pins. I also set it up so that it can now be used as a pilot berth over the double berth below it. I'm very happy with the upgrade in strength over the stock bolts. We had been having problems with the old ones warping and pulling out and dumping the entire board down on whoever was sleeping or sitting below. I'm not terribly happy with the drilling of larger holes and new holes for the role of upper pilot berth. Also all the up and down and moving of the unit into upper and lower positions has left a lot of rub marks on the bulkhead between the salon and head. The teak really needs to be treated. It is very dry and splintery when drilling it.
pictures coming soon.
