You can get the hull number (i.e serial number) off the stern.
The Hull number (HIN) is stamped on the outside of the hull (normally Port side of the stern).

It is broken down as follows;i.e.

He bumped the light bulb and broke it - he survived, but the resulting fire took out the interior of the boat and the deck. The current owner has the ultimate project boat.
