The first time I went sailing on Valkyr,
I was told that Valkyr
sometimes spoke . My husband has crewed on
Valkyr for a few years now. Then, about a
year ago, just after we were married, we purchased
Valkyr. I have been sailing on her a number of times and I
have to agree. She does seem to be saying something. Although I am
unable to distinguish just what she is saying, I am amazed at the
beauty of the sounds she makes while under sail. It is somewhat like
listening to the chatter of the whale; one doesn't know what is being
said merely that it is; it is breath taking. It seems so mysterious
how this inanimate object comes to life just like in the stories. I
can feel my soul just soar freely and peacefully when I am sailing.

I think I have told this story before, so I will keep it short. In
June of 2009, Scott and I were crewing on Valkyr
leaving the mouth of the Cape Fear. The water was the
roughest I had ridden. I can't tell you how high the water was only
that it was crashing over the bow. Standing at the dodger, watching
everything, I began to wonder if the anchor could possibly become
loose. I think I jinxed myself. As I watched the water come over the
bow I heard a rapid scraping sound it could only be the anchor racing
to the bottom of the inlet . I ran forward grabbed the life line with
one hand and grabbed the anchor chain with the other sat down on the
deck and held the chain back onto the deck until help got there. It
was wild riding those waves on the bow of such an awesome vessel. I
didn't have a care in the world after I grabbed the chain. With the
adrenaline rush I could feel it in my core that everything would be
just fine and that Valkyr was going to protect us from the
anger of Poseidon. I don't know if this illustrates the above
paragraph, but it did to me. I have heard her speaking to me on many
occasions in many different situations now, and I know that what you
speak of in your poem is true. All of it. If you must sell Makaira,
know that she will
always carry with her parts of you just as you will carry parts of
her.

GOOD LUCK!

1st Mate, SV Valkyr Zsanic

Her name is " Makaira" she is majestic, beautiful, surreal…….

She came into my life by chance……

She gives me peace & solitude, I love her regal grace as she sails

Her old world charm tugs at my heart everytime I see her.

She sits quietly, gently rocking me to sleep

as the waves lap upon her, I fall deeply into my dream….

In my dream we sail far away to crystel clear water

tropical rain, lush green ferns, tricking fresh water streams.

Standing on her bow sprit the wind blows on my face, in my hair

the fresh sea air & spray makes me feel alive.

In my dream I have a love that is shared,

its as strong as a gale force wind, unrelenting as

the oceans waves, its as gentle as a seagulls flight.

But the night passes too quickly, morning creeps

into the salon where I lay sleeping, dreaming….

I realize it was just a dream, there is no one here

to share this very small slice of heaven I have found

on " Makaira "
