I think the mast on our DE32 is original and has an external track riveted on!

In over 40,000 miles on the 6 boats I've owned, I've never used (needed?) a trysail. Perhaps if I had an easy to use one, I would use it. With a good cutter rig, I've found just the staysail (sometimes reefed) has worked in extreme conditions (or nothing at all!). Haven't tried with the DE32, but on two previous cutters. I've also been able to heave-to with the staysl alone.

Here is a link for fabricating a mast/sail gate:

http://www.mobyware.com/mobywa.....lgate.html

This would be not only resolve the trysail hoisting problems associated with the slug entry

being above the deck set trysail, but, if installed on the primary sail track/slot for the main sail,

would allow the main sail luff edge to flak tighter on the boom. Having the sail stop at the commonly

elevated slug entry well above the boom, has the head of the sail sitting proud, which wears against

the sail cover in that spot and unnecessarily creates a high profile on that portion of the flaked sail.

The thumb turns on one side makes this an easy on/off feature.

Definitely a nice solution, should be pretty cheap and cheerful to do up. It would be nice to leave the trysail on deck durning passage. I'd probably use it insead of the double reefed main more often.

sounds like it is factory after all 🙂

Jason..

you can make two plates that bolt on to the mast externally that fill in the cut out sides of the slot entrance. Owners of my old boat model have done this to convert it from a bolt rope to slugs in the past. It works well if you do it right. So you feed the sail down the slot and after it is in place you screw the plates in place so that you can raise and lower the sail from below the opening to above it.. You can keep a trysail in a bag on deck already on the slot.. I think you could do it with a couple of pieces

here is a pic of one of the owners mods for this

and here is a diffrent owners solution

It would be interesting get a sense of how many and which DEs have this feature.

The 2 sail slots are not a typical mast section on the current LeFiell website, but may have been during the DE production years.

http://www.lefiell.com/cruisemast.html (These current mast details from LeFiell also indicate a Tabernacle feature.)

Bodhran's mast is the same as Gracie Emmett's. It's great having that extra track on there for the trysail. Unfortunately the height of the gate doesn't work all that well for hanking on the sail and leaving it there until you need it. You end up having to feed it down to put it on deck and then when you hoist it, you have to make sure that each slide passes from the lower to upper section of the track. Still it's been very nice to have the 3 or 4 times I've used my trysail. I just don't bother putting it on the mast until I need it.

I wouldn't swear to this but that looks as if it isn't stock. Though I can't be sure. It looks like a more modern spar design. Our mast on the DE38 is a more roudned cross section. we do not have the second sailtrack.. wish we did for a trysail... I will end up bolting on an external sail track for that at some point.
