Instead of attaching at deck level your furler would sit above the attachment point of the boom. Your sail would be attached in a loose footed manner to end of boom. I'm pretty sure that will work.

Yes and yes I didn't realize I could have the self tacker and the furler on at the same time that sounds like a great idea. My boom is attached to the stay it's not the independent type of foot that attaches to the deck. I like what your suggesting if I'm understanding you correctly. But I'm a little confused. Your saying I put the furler on and and keep the self tender?it is nice to have I was planning on storing a dinghy there though. I'll have to get back to my thinking station and figure out something as you suggested...any one have pics of a furler set up on the staysail on a 32 with the self tender? Also any dinghy brands with storage options....p.s. ordering nfm 8x22 bronze ports to replace the big windows...I'll post some pics of that project too.

Are you sure you want to do that? On of the best things about this boat is the self tacking staysail. You can still use the roller furling on it but don't change out from the current self tending block arrangement to jib tracks that you have to manage during a tack. The most I would do is maybe go to a travelor like on a main that gives you the ability to trim with it but get a windward version that allows self tacking.

As to the roller furling, just have again set up like you would on a mainsail. You clew line goes to the end of the boom and back to the end of the boom at the stay sail before going to block on deck that then runs back to cabin top in cockpit. Or you could route it to port or starboard. maybe on opposite side from jib furling lines. You should be able to use the existing boom even. Just change out some fittings on the end to match the new configuration.

When your beat up and really tired you can furl the jib, reef the main and still use the full stay sail. At this point you don't have to do anything but turn the steering wheel to sail and sit at the helm. It makes for a great lazy day sailing or even give you some breathing space if you sailing her short handed in friskier conditions 🙂 I have spent the after noon in under 10 knots with my deck covered in lazy people doing nothing but steering and hanging out. Upwind and downwind. Did I get the best performance? Not even close! But I had a beautiful day on the water and didn't have to worry about a bunch of sailing liabilities causing an issue while we all chilled and went up and down the cape fear inlet. I think I trimmed the main with the traveler once or twice that day. 🙂

It's me again!! Thanks for all the help and advice this far. A little about what and why I'm doing what I'm doing. I've replaced most of the headliner I'm at the point where I'm trimming it out in teak. I've also bought a harken roller furling unit to replace the profurl on my headsail. This winter I'm going to remove the wooden bowsprit replace it with a stainless one and put the harken unit on the sprit. I'll have the profurl unit that still works left over and I was considering putting it in place of the self tending boom. Before I finish The headliner I wanted to put the travelers and cars on deck so in the future if I decide to put the furler on the staysail I won't need to rip down the headliner. Does any one have recommendations pictures or experiences with the placement/size/location?

I had the crazy thought during the night that maybe I should look for some old wooden blocks to make up the vang! All the other blocks on the boat are wood faced. Having several of these fancy new SS fiddle blocks might not look good! Of course one has to be sure of the strength of the "system" and with old blocks that might be nearly impossible (except by trial and error). Just a thought!

I just created a like to their website and you will have to search from there. I put in links to the products on the Schaefer website. While doing this I remembered Garhauer and looked on their site. You can purchase one of three different model boom vangs suitable for the DE38 from their website directly for 175 dollars. They make and sell directly their hardware and have incredible quality products. I have started to purchase their hardware more and more over the years and been impressed with it every time. The link to the boomvangs has been added to the original post I made.

I think I know what you are looking at but just want to be sure. It looks like the Shaefer Series 7 blocks would be the right size. Agreed?

I am learning some new terms like fiddles and beckets! Interesting.

As to the bails, I am thinking that they should be screwed into the widest points on the boom/mast to get the screws in shear. If the mast were off the boat I could through bolt the bail, but since it is mounted on the deck I'll have to use self tapping screws. (or should I drill and tap larger ones?)

So, i would say 3/8 inch line and blocks that can stand a couple thousand pounds force.

to give an example here is a schaefer boom vang kit for our size boat

https://hardware.schaefermarine.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=145_168&products_id=3511&zenid=s2m9tqijcfka51k0bu3vvtoh63

https://hardware.schaefermarine.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=147_128

The price on schaefers website is significantly more than on defender where I posted the first link.. however for some reason I could not get that link to post correctly so you will need to go to http://www.defender.com and just search for boom vang kit and then find it there.

I have purchased garhauer hardware for my boat and found it to be a fraction of the cost of the other name brands and absolutely stellar quality

here are some of their boom vang setups directly from them https://garhauermarine.com/catalog_process.cfm?cid=38 just look for the ones that have a 2800 lb working load. all of them are under 200 dollars ... they also have some decent bails.. Honestly I would give them a call and discuss your installation and what bail to use and how to attach it. I think that using screws to install it would not work well but that your going to need to get a bolt that goes through.. however all my boats already had it installed and I haven't taken one apart that I remember so I'm not going to be absolute about this. They have been very helpful over the phone when I called them before.

I think you could piece it together for a lot less than their price though. If you don't already have attachment points on mast and boom you need to figure in those.
