I have listed the following on craigslist (March 2026) for my re-power. Please feel free to repost it anywhere.

Universal Diesel 5424 Engine, Trans, etc, Complete and Working - $4,000

Hi Sailors. I have a fully running Universal Diesel 5424 ("M30") engine, complete system, FOR SALE. I am re-powering with a completely new system for my 32' Downeaster blue water sailboat. So I must pull and sell my existing setup. The engine is currently installed in the sailboat, which is in the water.

VIDEO OF THIS ENGINE RUNNING - https://youtu.be/j8b9_TrgmKU

The engine is the original installation in my sailboat, from Huntington Beach in 1981, by Boatswain's Locker, Inc. All parts are marine grade and highest quality for a blue water boat, for example Groco strainer, exhaust elbow, etc.

This is an electric start, 3 cyl. diesel which was later renamed Westerbeke "M30" for use in many Catalina Yachts, etc.

- Universal Diesel 5424 Engine (1981) = 24 HP, 3 cyl., electric start
- Lots of original documentation of parts and manuals
- Complete instrumentation panel (Tach, Batt, Fuel gauge, Water Temp, Oil Pressure)
- Bronze Groco ARG Raw water strainer
- Racor Fuel Filter
- Fuel/water separator filter
- Tall exhaust elbow, highly recommended for ocean voyaging
- Raw Water exhaust muffler
- Hurth Transmission
- 5 gal Fresh Water Hot Water Heater (120V AC and heat exchange engine heated)
- Heat Exchanger (clean!)
- Raw Water impeller pump
- Completely fresh rebuilt spare, Raw Water pump
- Diesel fuel lift pump (basic automotive grade)
- Various spare filters and belts: Oil Filter, Diesel Filter, Universal Belt, etc.
- Engine hours: 1,600 (actual hours is much much less, since engine hours tick up when ignition is on)

The engine starts right up!

The price listed indicates what I believe is a fair value, $4000 - $5000, for a fully working diesel system.

See the video of the engine running, https://youtu.be/j8b9_TrgmKU

Serious Buyer is invited to inspect the engine. Discuss with me the decommissioning and pulling the engine from the sailboat (marine yard, crane is available and close by). Crane cost might be $300-$400 for the pull. Bring your diesel mechanic. The engine can be pulled straight up through the companionway.

Contact me: Leave reply on the youtube video.

I see from your other posts you are repowering with electric. Cool. I just misunderstood, but had to ask.

They are called trail boards. (scroll work under the bow) and yes the later years where actually molded into the hull, I would cut them out with a saws all if molded in to get a set. The mold in design change started some time around 1978 on the DE38's.

Scott is parting out Valkyr and has a set that bolts on. He has them off the boat but has not posted them yet. I think his intent will be to take bids for a week and high bid gets them. They are worth a lot to me it would complete the look of Paper Moon properly. My only other alternative is to fabricate them. There is a post on the site from the owner of Britannia that outlined step by step how he made a set for his DE45 They look almost original. That will be my last resort.

Color scheme will be Sundown Bluff to match rail on the outer bullnose and swirl. Relief Oyster White, matches deck areas . Scroll face Ocean blue to match the stripe.

The DE32 trail boards are not boards. You mean the "scroll work" under the bow, right. On the Downeaster 32's, those are part of the fiberglass hull mold, not removable, in all years of manufacture except maybe the first year, in which there were only a few boats made. For those which did have attached boards, they would be much shorter and smaller than the DE38. They are definitely worth having since they give so much character to the boat. I will be repainting mine soon, maybe I'll use gold on blue. Also I have a gargoyle which I have always wanted to mount right under the bow as a figurehead, facing forwards and snarling.

Not parting out my boat, but doing some very large upgrades. Soon the Universal diesel engine, transmission, filter housings, alternator, raw water pump (Oberdorfer), and many other engine components will be for sale too.

I'll be removing my propane stove-oven from DE 32 Oasis at some time in the near future. It is the factory stove, still in working condition, and actually in very good condition in general. A set of fiddles might be included! I dont know how many people read this forum these days but if someone wants to buy this stove, send contact info and we can agree on a reasonable price. I don't know how much it weighs so consider how it might be picked up.

I also have 2 propane tanks which fit into the DE32 propane locker. They are round, upright tanks. Size is 5 lb maybe? I'm not sure what size they are because, the DE 32 uses these unique tanks. I will give away the tanks for free "or nice donation". These tanks are steel, 15+ years old, I repainted them several years ago, they have rust spots, be aware any such tanks are probably way out of certification spec, I don't even know if they can be refilled by a gas station. One of them has propane in it. Obviously I won't ship them. Pick them up in Southern California. So reply if you would like these.

I have a brand new Garhauer RV20-1SL rigid boom vang. It is sized for a DE 38 cutter. You will need to have or to procure the mast and boom brackets since I have installed the custom built ones that came with the vang on my boat. Garhauer will probably fabricate them at a reasonable price. I opted not to install it since it interferes with the main cabin hatch and I have a Dutchman arrangement. Sort of like having a belt and suspenders for the topping lift.

i don't think I will be installing due to other maintenance matters taking priority.
these would be great for replacement of existing or to install midship.
these are new, never installed, top of the line, cast in US, are heavy duty, have cleats, are machined so that the thru bolts screw into the other side holding them together.
$250 each plus $25 shipping each as they are heavy. Thanks

you can pretty much forget it unless you run across a good used one. Most countries you can't buy them anymore though I have heard that some places you can.. forget where though, which isn't much help for you unfortunately

I ran into the 4 strokes suck for power issue on my beneteau years ago. I had a johnson 4hp 2stroke that I replaced with a tohatsu 6hp 4stroke. I lost 25% of my power I was used to. Had a big blowout with tohatsu that I lost. Argued that they misrepresented the engine. I was rated 6 hp at almost 6000 rpm and it had trouble hitting 4000 rpm with any prop tohatsu made on anything from a dingy to a 23 ft sailboat. Tested a second engine of the same line and got the same results so I don't believe it was a lemon.

Other than not really being 6hp it was reliable and sipped fuel compared to the old engine.
