There's a new Fender electric guitar which also has USB & headphone port for direct connection to a laptop or tablet or iphone. Perfect for a boat w/o room for an amp or extra gadget boxes. It is being sold through the Apple store of all places, as an iOS-ready guitar. $200... very tempting to keep on board. Would have to find a place to put it though (not a side berth!).

So all the talk of instruments and such has motivated me to play around with stuff again. 🙂 I had given my wife my flute and she guards it like hawk 🙂 I keep telling her that if it survived me owning it for 20+ years that me playing it once in a while won't damage it but she does tend to treat it much much nicer than I do 🙂

So I ran across another instrument that I found interesting. The Ocarina. So I purchased a few cheap ones to play with. Pretty cool instrument. I got a couple traditional sweet potatoe models and a couple inline mountain ocrinas. They are chromatic and the ones I got are plastic and polycarbonate. I figured I didn't need to get excessive in cost for them until I actually could play decently. If I stick with it and enjoy them I will pop for more expensive ones. However I have heard recordings just with the plastic ones that sound increadable. 🙂 why can't I make them sound like that? hehehe.

here are where I purchased some of the models I have

http://www.mountainsocarina.com/b/

http://stlocarina.com/

here is one of those nice expensive ones that i can't afford 🙂

http://hindocarina.com/

some more wood ones

http://doubleocarina.com/

The make great boat instruments 🙂

Curious what you guys have or have thought of bringing onboard.

I was a drummer (professional) for twenty years and ~ although my Ludwigs were aboard (DE38 Eclipse) when sailing from Annapolis MD to Fort Lauderdale FL ~ I would not consider setting them up let alone playing them on board.

However ~ having taught myself to play guitar ~ I have a beat up, ocean-going classical guitar (made in Valencia) and ~ despite the Saye's Rig self-steering gear ~ have become quite adept at steering with my feet while playing.

Am learning to play the ukulele ~ "twangy" you say? Give Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody ~ by Jake Shimabukuru a listen.

Added an mbira (thumb piano) to the collection … an easy one to play ~ it all sounds good.

As you suggested ~ actually have an ocarina but am better at banging than blowing!

Tried my hand as a lyricist ~ here's a song sailors can relate to!

Trumpet. I am a recreational trumpeter--with the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra, local bands, etc. I carry a pocket trumpet on-board Dolphin, a DE 32. Recently, on my transport up from Everett WA to Homer, AK, I was boarded by the US Coast Guard for a routine inspection. When they got to the part about "audible signaling device," I pulled-out the trumpet and played Reveille for them. It was a big hit.

Our friend Tyler made us each a flute for our birthdays last year, and while we haven't mastered the art of playing them yet, they are fun to mess around with as they each have a very different, unique sound. He is amazing with some piece of bamboo and a little torch!! He makes them on his boat, and can play any type of flute beautifully. Also, they don't take up much space!

I brought on a couple nice harmonicas –Marine Band (wonder how long they will stay in tune?),which take up negligible space.

Guitars are a bit too big I think although I know a couple of DE32 captains have one (or more!). Uke? Maybe someday, perhaps small enough, though a bit twangy for my ears.

Recently saw a neat, inexpensive usb (midi?) drum pad set I was thinking of getting for onboard, hook to headphones or garageband for some fun musical exercise, takes up very little space to store, still TBD.

What others are small enough to take onboard? An Ocarina is another possible choice..
