Ours has the metal ring and a drain. We use it as garbage container but it is a lot of space for that...when we start cruising we might use it for something else, storage etc. Incidentally, My boyfriend made a shelf with a rope attached for the space next to it...we have storage down below for infrequently used stuff. Then have mixers and liquor above. Can easily pull the shelf to get to stuff below when needed. Works pretty good.

I thought that it may be garbage storage and the stainless rod around the perimeter of the opeing was for holding a bag in place. still seems like a strange place to put something like that.

That space is a royal pain in the a** . I think it was built as a quick and dirty ice box say to throw the sodas in or such.. However it doesn't have a drain and is a pain to clean up. We ended up using it as dry storage but that is problematic as you are constantly getting water into it from the sink when you spray or spill some on the edge of the sink and it runs over and into the compartment. Then it will never dry out because the lid is on it and everything in there will mildew and mold. If not looked at daily or weekly you will end up with a mess and the bottom will be a grungy mess from mildew , mold and cockroaches that seem to love it in there also. So make it one of your check and clean spaces on a weekly basis and you will have no issue.

When we first got the boat I thought it was a cool space. Now I just wish that the had made a bigger space for the cooler compartment behind it for a fridge or freezer.

I see you have a seal under the lid on yours. Ours doesn't and that might make a difference in how easy water runs down into i from the counter top. You will have to let us know how your experience runs with that.
