I got rid of those factory switches because somebody had done a good number on the electrical system on my boat. Lots of blanked off runs, bodged connections here and there, a GFI that mysteriously popped and shutoff AC to the whole boat. (Funny hasn't happened since I replaced it all right).

That would work well, our controls are at the chart table. So well protected but harder to access for the helm person 🙂

You will have more issues on an ongoing basis with them at the helm. Not saying not to do it as I would think it would be fine for years before you need to do maintenance to fix switches etc.. Down below we are still using factory switches just fine, so longevity is better there.

Looking at mounting a switch panel on my binnacle for operating things like the masthead light, anchor light, tri-color light, navigation lights etc. I can't find a good spot to really mount this, and I don't want to cut into my cockpit well to do it. Thoughts on this arrangement?

It's cut specifically to hold this panel: https://www.bluesea.com/products/4378/WeatherDeck_12V_DC_Waterproof_Circuit_Breaker_Panel_-_Gray_8_Positions
