for livability I would go with a lighter color. We are doing everything we can to lighten up the interior of Valkyr without painting over any of the wood. When we redo the ceiling it will probaly be white panels or very light wood panels.

On Eolian, the ceiling is teak - both in the forward cabin and in the aft cabin and head.

But I think that traditionally, a lighter-colored wood was used - say yellow cedar.

Hey Erick,

I think the slats are called "ceiling strips" (go figure, but the ceiling is the covering for the inside of the hull on a boat) and on my boat they are teak. Yours might be something else of course. I wonder what others have found...

I'm pretty sure that the ceiling strips and all the trim on Amatheia is teak. The bulkheads and cabinets etc are plywood with a what looks to be very thin teak veneer. Amatheia's interior was most likely oiled, and the wood has darkened considerably over the years. We've begun sanding the galley area and the sanded plywood and trim lightened considerably.

I'm not sure about the cabinet and locker doors.

Can anyone give me a rundown on the types of wood on our boats and where each is? I assumed most of the interior cabinetry, trim and doors are teak. But I recently started pulling the decorative slats off the hullsides and they seem to be a different type of wood.
