John,

Welcome to the forums and Downeaster Yachts community. I'm looking forward to seeing your refurbishment on your new purchase.

We have been looking at building a dinghy but ended up purchasing an inflatable a month or so ago from west marine. They gave me a deal I couldn't pass up (half price) 🙂

I would still like a hard dingy also. The time and effort involved in building it is what pushed me into purchasing an inflatable. What time and energy I have I am saving for the refit on our DE38 Valkyr. I think I and most others would be interested in your dingy project so feel free to talk about it and document it here on the forums 🙂

Howdy, I just wanted to drop a line to introduce myself.

I'm John and I just bought a much loved, yet wholly neglected DE38 ketch down in Houston. The survey brought up some issues, but nothing too significant - we all know how these old boats are.

The boat's the Firefly (ex-Argonaut) and she's down in Clear Lake (south of Houston) I'll post a project list when I finalize it.

This is my third "big" boat - previously a Coronado 25 and Alberg 30. I was also fortunate enough to work as a deckhand on a 300' three masted barque back when I was younger. Currently, I'm a marine engineer working oil rigs which gives me ample time off to play with the Firefly - unfortunately, I'm never onshore when I want to be 😀

The forum here has been a wealth of information for me while I researched the DE38 and I'm very appreciative of all the posts I read. I look forward to learning even more and perhaps throwing some of my ideas out there, as well.

When I get home, the first job is to build a dinghy! It can't be that hard... or can it?
