Hello everyone, thank you for accepting me to your forum!  We are looking at a DE 32 that is in very good shape, but on this particular DE 32 there is a door from the main saloon to the head area, but from there it is open right to the v-berth, with just a sliding partician on the upper part of the v-berth. The toilet is just right below the opening of the v-berth that and off to the side.

I've looked at the original drawings, gone to most DE blogs and the ones on here to look at their photos, and being at this angle, it is hard to tell, but it appears most DE32 do actually have a wall/door angling across to give that area some privacy.  I think I can see that on the drawings.

So my question is, do any of you have a configuration with an open head area to the v-berth?  Is this something that is common? Any ideas on how to make this area more private?  Would building a wall with a door be a huge undertaking?

Let me add we are planning to add a composting head to whichever boat we end up purchasing, so that could give us a little wiggle room as far as scooting the actual toilet over a bit if possible.

Thanks for reading this, I really hope it makes sense, I will attach a photo of the head for you to see, but I wish I had gotten a better pic that shows the overall scheme of it better.  But basically no doors other than door from saloon to head area, which is then wide open and spacious, but has the v-berth right in there with it just about.

DE38's have a companionway between the salon and the v-berth with a door to port that enters the head. their is a door into the v-birth ahead of you and then as you walk into the vberth another door on port in the vberth that goes to the head. So there are two doors on the head one to the companionway between the salon and the vberth and one into the vberth..

DE32 im not totally sure of..

DE32 Gracie Emmet looks to be layed out the same as our DE38. If you click on the link you can see the images.. hmm let me see if I can post it here. If you look at the two images you can see by the angle you are looking at the head from that there has to be two doors that you are looking through.. the one taken from the vberth even shows the edge of the door that opens into the vberth.

here is a different DE32 and you can see the edge of a door to the right low down that would go to the vberth

here is a line drawing of DE32 Seabird that shows two doors on the head and how they open

I hope this helps.. since I have never actually been on a DE32 I don't have much more information than that.. I'm sure that some of our DE32 owners will be along soon to set the record straight.

hmm..

on looking at the picture you posted in more detail I believe your boat has been modified. If you will compare the layout with the line drawing you will see that the v-berth has been permanently filled in with there is a gap that the door would open into. I would say that it is a owner modification as I can see the lines of the vertically run wood planks? on the face of the v-berth where they meet the floor. The door and drawers there are also non standard I believe. This gives you a bigger bed I believe at the loss of some floor space maybe.

I'm not sure what I would advise.. You could certainly put the wall back and a door in.. but to do it right with matching teak will be very expensive. Even if with cheaper materials it would be a lot of work. Maybe a track on the floor following the old wall profile and another on the overhead with a heavy canvas wall that accordions out of the way along the track when you want it open and pulls taunt and locks in place when you want it closed off. almost best of both worlds? The existing half door just looks silly from a functional perspective much less aesthetics.

Composting head is the way to go! We love ours.

Thanks so much for your detailed reply Scott.  Yes I see, all the other ones seem to have a door to the head.  And you are right, the V berth seems to be filed in permanently.  It does make for a very spacious head, but very little privacy.  Maybe the canvas idea on a track could work, I don't know.  If there's this much involved it just seems maybe better to keep moving on and looking at more boats.  We just can't decide what to do, it's a great boat, but this could be a real hassle.

Which composting head do you have?

I would definitely expect a bit of a discount on price the way that has been modified if you wanted it.. wouldn't be a deal breaker to me but you will have to put some money and time into it to take it back to stock or do something else that gives you some privacy. I definitely would never have that arrangement with a standard head because of odors. Maybe with a composting head, but I would still prefer a partition between the rest of the boat and the head.

We have the natures head and it is great.. we have had it of 4 years or so with 18 months of living on the boat with it and would never go back. We removed the old head, all plumbing and the holding tank and regained a lot of space. There are some comprehensive threads on here where I go into a lot of detail about using it and maintaining it.

The Air head brand would be comparable to the natures head in style of usage. I would not use any other brands than those two.. Sunmar is an older company that many have heard of  but their composting toilets are larger and have lots of issues with odors because of the way they deal with feces and urine. The Natures head and air head separate these before they mix and it makes all the difference.

Thanks so much Scott.  To be clear, there is a door from the main saloon to the head, but then once you are in the head, you are essentially ready to hop right up into the V-berth as well.  So it's the lack of privacy from V-berth to head that's the issue.

We are totally sold on the composting toilet idea, even if we don't have a boat yet!  It's nice to hear you've had the nature's head for 4 years and still love it. We are excited about that, and have been comparing the air head and nature's head.  Get's tricky because it seems many people have strong opinions one way or the other, so I've gone down some real rabbit holes reading about the differences.  I think when we finally find "the one" we can delve deeper into choosing which head.

If only we can find the one!  We've driven thousands of miles in the last 5-6 weeks looking and just haven't quite found it.  This DE 32 has so many incredible qualities to it, but this issue is just a real bummer.  Also I found the settees to be quite uncomfortable and rigid, but figured that we could add additional pillows to get it more comfy, so not a huge deal.  We are still considering it the boat, but also continuing to look around in case something perfect pops out at us.

Thanks for all your help, I'll let you know if we end up with her.  And maybe we will hear from some other DE 32 owners who have had this particular situation and came up with a solution- that would be great to hear!

I would be more concerned with those two cabinet doors at knee level in the head.  I think that would mean that the bulkhead(?) (which is between the vberth and the head, right?) has been cut thru, to make these doors open into storage underneath the vberth.

That floorplan is certainly a different style.. personally I wouldn't like it much I think.

Check the pics of 1979 DE32 Oasis, she has only one door into the head.  Head is separated from the vberth by  a wood panel ceiling to floor on the inside of the head, and a wood panel from ceiling to bulkhead on the vberth side.

Some other DE32's have two doors to the head:   one from the main cabin and one to the vberth, which means there are 3 doors in the same small area (cabin to head, cabin to vberth, vberth to head).

Thank you Johnathon Oasis, your boat does look beautiful.  Not only do you have a bathroom door, you have that nice u shaped seating- which I would prefer.  Well, we made our offer on this particular DE32, offer has been accepted, and survey done.  So now we are making our final, final decision.  Overall we just love the Downeaster yachts, and the classic styling, and overall saftey/sturdiness of these vessels.

We will just build a door. [Image Can Not Be Found]
