If you've got the stuff to do it, you could easily weld together a square stainless frame from bar stock. You'd basically sandwich two frames on either side and thru bolt it. I've got a lot of leftover 3/16" thick 316L Stainless flat bar as well. If you want to send me a PM I could put a frame together for you for some beer and smokes money.

Thanks, Patrick. I agree that reinforcement is a good idea. Maybe a circular hatch. Possibly can find a ready made one with frame and hatch.

cheers

Yeah, I think that bulkhead provides most of its structural support beam to beam, not fore to aft. The port side is completely unsupported in mine and I think it's just there to contain the quarter berth. If you were really concerned, I bet you could frame the access hatch and reinforce it with additional structure.

Being rather tall and not so flexible as I used to be, I am having problems squeezing into the engine room on the port side. This makes servicing the batteries and water pumps nearly impossible. Hence I am considering cutting an access port in the bulkhead that separates the starboard quarter berth from the engine room. Has anyone else done this? Should be easy enough, but would the hole weaken the structure? Since there is no bulkhead on the port side I would think not. Opinions?

thanks in advance

Bob
