The home brew mppt controller his is building is really interesting... I will be following that closely.

I just purchased right at 3000 watts of solar panels for my house. got a great deal at about 32 cents a watt delivered. I have been wondering how I was going to set the system up and would love to do something like he is setting up where I have multiple redundant mppt controllers.

What size generator? From what i read you need a 4000 at a bare minimum to get what would otherwise have out of shore power.

This guy has an interesting setup: http://mvvikingstar.blogspot.com/

I guess he rigged a homebuilt generator from a big alternator and a Kubota engine controlled through some custom software he wrote.

I'm also waiting for these guys from Caltech to make their technology cheaper so I can just convert the diesel fuel straight to electricity and get rid of the whole engine all together: http://www.safcell-inc.com/ (ha!)

Where Scott describes is where my 3.5k rests. My house bank batteries are in the quarter berth, so the weight counter balances each other for proper helm. I need to move the battery bank into the space below the quarter berth where the seat is for the navigation station is, but first is fix the leak in the v birth. The gen set has it own filter for fuel and also it own thru hull for cooling. It is wired as such then it auto takes over the electric distribution as if I am plugged into a dock. Not that you asked, but I also have 400 watt wind and 350 of solar. It is a bit noisy, evenwith the sound barrier I have installed. Good Luck, Travis

thats 200+ lbs way aft... best compromise I have thought of is on portside in the engine compartment just aft of the galley bulkhead. Still a bit aft and high for my tastes but what are you going to do. Ideally it would go under the floor in the salon where one of the water tanks are for balance but thats not very practical.

I'm thinking in one of the lazarettes behind helm. Anybody else have a genset, where do you keep it?
