We had such a hard time figuring out where air was entering into the system that I haven't done the parrelel filter yet. We so far have just put one filter in line and have removed all manifolds and extra lines. So for now the engine actually runs where it didn't for many a moon. I will be revisiting the project to install the second filter and valves at a later date. 🙂

I am also looking at adding a second primary diesel filter. I currently have a Lucas Cav 296 which is doing fine but I want the security of being able to shut off a dirty filter without shutting down the engine. Fuel filters always play up in rough weather when you just don't need it.

I imagine I'll just get another Lucas Cav 296 and a bit of plumbing (pipe, 3 or 4 way valve etc).

Just thought I'd get an update from you as to how you went setting your system up?

I really like the functionality of the existing system but there is about 20 feet of fuel line where 3 different fuel lines basically circle the entire engine. Right now the fuel line manifold and single external filter are port and slightly aft of the engine. the fuel lines start at the fuel tank and run down the port side of the engine to the filter and then to the manifold. From the manifold three fuel lines run from behind the engine and up the starboard side of the engine to the on engine fuel pump and to the the parallel electric fuel pump with a return line to the tank somewhere in there.

Right now you can run the engine on the manual fuel pump or the electric fuel pump. You can prime the fuel system with the electric fuel pump, and you can isolate the electric fuel pump to use it as a fuel polishing system. I am going to keep the system as is for functionality but will add a second external filter in parallel with the existing filter so that you can switch from one filter to the other if needed.

I will move the existing fuel manifold from port to starboard and that should reduce the length of the fuel runs to less than 3 feet long both going and coming from the fuel tank. Also it will put the filters and manifold less than 18 inches from the engine fuel pump and the electric fuel pump.

I have crawled in and out of the engine compartment several times now and the rats nest of fuel lines, engine coolant lines, etc.. are a pain. I am going to gradually redo it all so that it is all run in a clean and compact manner that is easy to access and work on but not in the way of me getting into and out of the engine compartment. I just know that I have a lot of hours of work on various system back up in there. :)

The other engine compartment project that will be happening soon is a slide in tray that goes just over the engine so that you can crawl across or lay across it without touching the engine. Right now you are stepping on and crawling on the engine when getting into the engine compartment. I can't imagine that it is good for the injector rails, hoses, wires, etc.. that you are touching. Not to mention you can't do it at all if the engine is running or is hot from being run. This should solve all those issues at one go.

Hopefully I will get to install them in the next couple weeks. Here is where I got them. I called them and got two of these for $200 and 6 spare filters for an extra $50. So far that puts me at $250 on this project. I still have to purchase some fittings and 3 way valves.

I plan on installing these on the starboard side of the engine compartment up front and over the engine. The wood lip at the opening on either side is 2 inchs wide so by installing these aft of that lip that the stairs rest on they shouldn't extend to far into the opening to get in the way. They are supposed to be 4.8 inches deep when mounted. That will put 2.8 inches of them extending past that lip. However I expect to get about 4 to 6 inches back on the other side of the opening when I move the coolant overflow tank from there to somewhere away from the entrance.

my criteria has been cheap replaceable filters, vacume gauge and a simple on lever ability to switch between filters.

Separ and Racor seem to be supported products. I got someone on the phone at both companies quickly who was helpful. Griffin is a chinees company and the only US distributer that I can find is hard to communicate with. They only have email on their website. Though when emailed they did send me a phone number. However the phone number goes to an anonymous voicemail and I haven't gotten a call back yet. Griffin filter unit is a knock off of the racor one and can use standard racor 2010 filters.

Separ price is about $1300

Racor prices is about $800

Griffin price is about $500 actually i am guestimating as the same product in the non marine version.. no heat sheild under the unit is $455

Kti with the filterboss is a deluxe system with built in electronic fuel pump but is pricey in the $1400 range.

I am wanting to install a dual filter setup with racor fuel filters that also do water seperation. If one filter clogs up you can just switch to the secondary filter and continue running while you change out the clogged one. Does anyone else have a similar setup? if so where is it mounted and how did your run all the lines.
