A small 100 watt solar panel will give you 10 times more power over time than a regenerative system. Honestly regenerative is ok with electric drive boats since it is already built in but on one of ours it is another complex physical system attached to your drive shaft that is maintenance waiting to happen for very very  little return. You could build a dedicated system that has a very large prop/wheel that hands off the back of the boat and would even generate a few amps at anchor with a 1 + knot current.. However if used under sail it would impose very large drag.

 

I had this dream a long time ago and would do hybrid/solar electric like a shot with a large battery bank and 20+ hp electric motor. Lots of solar panels for charging normally and when wanting to motor more than 5 or 6 hours a 10+kw diesel generator to run it at 3/4 speed. One or two motors on shafts that are mounted on transom and raise or lower outof into the water. Would be a fun project but cost probably 25,000 or so.   Electric motor 4 to 8 grand depending, battery bank 2 to 8 grand depending, generator 8 grandish, all the parts between another couple grandish.

are you going to a electric drive or just free wheeling the prop with a clutch and generator attached to the shaft?
