Sorry I got toooooo busy to even check back. I heard the engine was salvaged but not sure what else or where. The marine guy said it was caused by the hurricane/floods (which big one, I forget now). So at least that part is good news, because I wouldn't want to hear of a DE32 sinking from a voyage.

I received the following terse note from a broker today.

Sad news about the Downeaster 32 in North Carolina. Major structural damage found and the boat is being scrapped. The motor and battery are being purchased by a prospect in Washington state.

Not sure which named boat this is but I probably have old pictures stored somewhere. Seems like some DE32's need major work these past few years, because of neglect and the past decade's economy.

It’s been quite a while since I posted on this forum, but I haven’t been tardy in restoring my DE 45 Britannia. There are many new modifications since my last post.

I have also been very active in writing articles which have been published in major yachting magazines in America, England and Australia.

The boat is now more or less finished, and we hope to get some extended cruising in this summer.

My website is also up to date with the latest alteration, a completely revised chart table area.

Hello all,

DE 38c #79 here Changing Seas, formerly Carpe Diem.

Well folks what a story we have to tell. Her Captain, James has been sailing on again off again for 17 years mostly in the Pacific Northwest. Originally a desert boy, he found himself in love with the ocean and can't escape her seductive body. Her First mate is his wife Amy a poor obviously bamboozled young woman who having never set foot on the ocean in her life followed the captain to live aboard ship 3 years ago.

Originally we owned a clipper 32, and lived aboard full-time for 3 years. When we were offered a deal on one of the sexiest boats we had seen in a while. A DE38c named Carpe Diem. Her owner (fourth I believe) had purchased her from a broker to live the dream, only to find out it didn't fit his lifestyle, and sadly while he was busy elsewhere she ran aground during a particular bad storm in January of this year.

However, that's when we intervened. He was burned out, while the insurance company lifted her off the beach and refloated the boat, he wanted to abandon her and wash his hands. I happened to be around on our 32 and as the saying goes that was that. We worked a deal so he got some money, we got a solid gorgeous boat.

We rechristened her, and after a long sailor approved ritual we chose the name Changing Seas, as that is our goal.

She's had a hard run, there was damage, and she needs lots of love.

-lost all running rigging

-engine flooded

-electrical system seriously messed up

-loss of all sails (shredded)

-davits destroyed

- name plates destroyed

- pulpit railing damaged

- bowsprit cracked

- loss of stay boom

- plus a ton of small issues.

Our first month of ownership I can happily report the following repairs are completed.

Ran all new halyards

Complete rebuild of Perkins 4108 (I love diesel)

Partial rewire of electrical at least all the criticals.

Some interior wood repairs.

We're currently running on small temp sails but she sails well and moves gorgeously. Got a main from a 35' so sails like she's reefed, staysail off a 26' jib and 110 jib off a 38' all donated by sailors I know around the area.

Well that's all for now. Will post more as we do more.

Capt James

I admire what you have done with your boat, it truly is a dramatic change.

I am the proud owner of hull #19; which has been sitting in a lake in the Tenn. river for at least 15 years, that people can remember. No one ever remembers seeing it away from the dock and she had quite a collection of moss and lichen so I have been told.

Any assistance on the process of moving your chainplates outboard would be greatly appreciated as this is one task I would like to do to rid myself of those pesky little leaks. I discovered the main leaks were the drains, so all the cabinets were falling apart.

At some times the task ahead looks daunting until I see boat such as yours and Scotts and others, it encourages me.

Thanks:

John

Enjoyed your web site. Brings back a lot of memories. Your aft seat looks great. Thanks for the tip on polishing the brass. Will give it a try. Chain plate leaks were a constant battle for me. Most things I tried lasted about six to nine months. Finally solved the problem by moving the chain plates to the outside of the boat. A surprising easy job. Thank you for the flour salt, and vinegar tip: a tip for you, to prevent corrosion between dissimilar metals, make a gasket out of old X-Ray film.

Cheers and beers,

Jim
